Mention San Diego and nearly everyone pictures beautiful beaches. It is an accurate picture and clearly the reason why many come to San Diego on their vacations. Spending all of your time at the beach, however, can be a mistake given all the other attractions the city has to offer.

Okay, "mistake" might be a bit much. The truth of the matter is kicking back on the beach is a rather good way to spend any day. Still, there are other things to do in town and you might just get the hankering to take a day off from baking in the rays of the sun.

The first option is the San Diego Zoo. It sounds trite, but it is actually a very amazing zoo. Located near downtown in an area known as Balboa Park, the zoo is massive and filled with a host of animals you don’t see in most places. It is really beyond words. Plan to spend a full day there. The zoo is located on a number of hills, so wear comfortable shoes. You can also take a tram once your feet begin barking.

I’m not a big wine drinker, but many of my friends are. If you are a fan of the grape, you can sign up for a vineyard tour. The vineyards are just north of San Diego. You can jump in a limo that takes you around to the various wineries where taste testing occurs. It takes about an hour to get there, but you won’t really mind since you are in a limo!

Hiking is another favorite of San Diegans. There’s plenty of it in the city and surrounding areas. There’s hiking and bouldering at Mt. Woodson in Poway and plenty more. You can pop onto a book site and get a copy of "Afoot and Afield: San Diego County". It is packed with hikes across the county and grades them by difficulty.

What about Mexico? A day trip to Mexico has long been a must do when visiting San Diego. Alas, the drug violence along the border has made visiting the country very risky and I suggest you skip any day trip at this time. Hopefully, things will turn around and be better in the future.
