Is there such a thing as a free tax service? The answer is a resounding yes, but it is also a very limited resounding yes.
The Loch Ness Monster. Fiscal Responsibility by the government. An honest politician. A cheap lawyer. A free tax service. Yes, all of these are urban legends, but do any of them actually exist in the real world? Sadly, it appears the free tax service is the only one.
Are there free tax services available to regular Joe’s like you and me? Yes. The problem is they are only available in very limited situations. The most common one is New Year’s Eve. People are going to get loaded on this lovely evening and the powers that be know it. To try to keep as many deranged drunks off the road as possible, groups ranging from Mothers Against Drunk Driving to local cab companies get together to provide free cab service for the evening.
The same is often true for special occasions. Let’s say you’re a fan of a crappy local sports team. I’m in San Diego, so I’ll go with the San Diego Chargers and Padres. Neither has a chance in hell of winning a championship. That being said, if they did, the same groups would give up on any notion that people were going to be sober on the day in question. Again, we would find free cab service being offered. The same is true in any city. If there is a special civic occasion that will be celebrated with adult beverages, you can often find a free cab service of one sort or another.
Okay, what about on run of the mill days? Unfortunately, you are not going to find any free taxi service on said days as far as I know of. Cab companies are for-profit entities. While they will do their civic duty on a special occasion like New Years, they are not going to do so every day.
You’ll just have to pay them for a ride on a normal day.
