I happen to be a big fan of The Simpsons. There is one episode about music wherein Bart comments that selling depressing music to teenagers is like shooting fish in a barrel. Well, the same can be said about running holiday oriented promotional campaigns. They are a no brainer and always do well unless you work really hard to mess them up.
As a marketer, I love holidays. Why? There always seems to be one on the horizon, which means there is always an opportunity do a promotion and make a killing. If your business is not regularly taking advantage of these options, you need to get moving quickly.
Pick a holiday….any holiday. Okay, let’s go with Valentine’s Day. Our theme is love and romance. Okay, why is this a good promotional opportunity? Well, it has the "must" factor. Simply put, one party, the man, must buy something for the other party or risk sleeping on the couch the rest of the year…a very lumpy couch.
We have a large, captive audience that is just dying to be receptive to our campaign. So, how do we take advantage of it? Let’s say I own an electronics store and sell televisions. Well, I could offer a special promotion that offers the deliver of a free dozen roses to the customer’s person of choice with the purchase of a small television. The customer is going to love this. He can buy her a small television for her bathroom or whatever while also getting the roses he would otherwise have to buy. It is a slam dunk and an offer that is going to get a lot of interest.
When discussing holidays, most people immediately think of Christmas. This makes sense, but you should be thinking much broader. Valentine’s Day. Halloween. Thanksgiving Day. Mother’s Day. Father’s Day. Cinco de Mayo. St. Patrick’s Day. The list is nearly endless or at least long enough that you should be able to run numerous campaigns.
Now get out there and do it!
